The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

Synopsis

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now…

Thoughts so far:

Nolite te bastardes carborundorum – Don’t let the bastards grind you down

A very well-detailed and imaginative dystopian classic. I’m surprised by how much I’ve been enjoying this work as I am hesitant on hyped up books because of the pressure to like them because everyone else does. The themes of risk, complacency, sacrifice, and pleasure (and lack thereof) emanate from the text and quick bursts of Offred’s current life and the one before the brainwashing. It is fascinating to read about stripping women of their rights and placing them into servitude categories designated by color. They don’t even have real names, nor do we learn what Offred’s was before. Sustaining the White race is the burden of the Handmaid’s who only have three chances to make that work or they’ll become the Unwomen. The optimist in me wants to believe that she is escaping near the end and not a ploy by the chauffeur Nick. What do you think Offred’s fate is??

What have you been reading lately?
