Written 6 years before the bestselling Hillbilly Elegy, Valby dives into small town life in Utopia, Texas where she chronicles the lives of four individuals in rich detail and storytelling across multiple generations and social identities. Although coming more from an observational standpoint, there is much overlap of personal narratives that break the stereotypes of small town America.
Some notable quotes:
“Their stories of flight are both mundane and heroic. Whether you grew up in the suburbs or the city, many of us know what it feels like to run from who or what you don’t want to be. It’s just more romantic if that escape route was down Main Street, bound for the highway” (Valby 5)
“Leaving now just seems like a bad idea, it wasn’t to further my education, it was just to get the hell out of Utopia. And eventually one day it just hit me: You got to learn to be happy in the situation you’re in, even if it’s not perfect” (Valby 138)
